Letter to Editor: Claire of Sewanee, TN

December 15, 2016

Claire of Sewanee, TN writes:

I recently became a Certified Application Counselor. During this Open Enrollment period, I am serving in communities in rural Tennessee, mainly in Grundy, Marion and Franklin counties.

This is has been an extremely rewarding experience. I have helped enroll/re-renoll 17 people so far who have all been extremely grateful for coverage.

Majority of the people I have assisted have qualified for a tax subsidies that brought their monthly premium down to ZERO dollars a month. Most of the people I have assisted have low paying jobs that do not offer health insurance. Without the Affordable Care Act, most of the people I have assisted would be forced to pay hundreds of dollars a month and most likely decided health insurance was too expensive.

While it might not be perfect, the Affordable Care Act has helped people in the underserved and overlooked counties of Grundy, Marion and Franklin afford live saving health insurance.
