Letter to Editor: Samm of Madison, TN

February 1, 2017

Samm of Madison, TN writes:

While I am proud of Tennessee’s two senators, Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, I am concerned that both of them have talked about the need to sustain the benefits of ACA for those in need until a better plan is in place, but then both turned around and voted for the immediate repeal of the ACA.  This is clearly a complex issue.  The ACA has some serious problems, but at the same time it has provided essential aid to many, many Tennesseans in need.  We can fix the problems without disrupting the much needed benefits the ACA provides.  This is not an issue for political gamesmanship or partisan power plays.  This is people’s lives and health, it is hospitals struggling to survive inflated costs, it is prescription medicines driving people to poverty, it is a major economic issue.  The so-called ‘donut hole’ in Medicare almost killed me when I first slammed into it.  ACA removed that Medicare gap that serves insurers while impoverishing or doing medical harm to the insured.  My son is a juvenile (type I) diabetic going on 28, and will have few choices left him if he is denied decent insurance at a reasonable price.  Help us.
