Letter to Editor: Melissa of Nashville, TN

January 31, 2017

Melissa of Nashville, TN writes:

Dear Senator Alexander,

I am a constituent from Nashville. I’m writing because I stand by your statements to wait to repeal the ACA until we have a replacement plan in place. However, I’m disappointed by your recent vote on the budget resolution that seems to go against your original statement.

Have you ever faced a gap in coverage? As a writer I remember that the scariest part of leaving a magazine staff position to work as a freelance writer was my anxiety over getting denied coverage because I had previously taken drugs for severe cystic acne. When I eventually got married and became eligible for health care through my husband’s job, I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders that I could never again be denied coverage. When the ACA was passed, I felt a sense of physical relief for all the people who were saddled with the anxiety I had felt but face much more severe health issues than I did. As I’m sure you are aware, there are 2.8 million Tennesseans with pre-existing conditions who could be denied affordable, comprehensive coverage.

I urge you to use your power to not repeal without a replacement.
