Dear Senator Alexander,
My name is Madison Johnson, and I am a constituent from Nashville. I am writing to express my fears that repeal of the ACA would result in lost access to care, and ultimately to the loss of lives in Tennessee.
I am a psychiatry resident at Vanderbilt, where I see patients from many socioeconomic backgrounds. I work in a homeless outreach clinic where the chronically mental ill are seen. Most of these homeless individuals lack insurance of any kind, but as we work alongside social workers to obtain resources for these patients, they are sometimes able to obtain insurance. I have been lucky enough to see several homeless individuals on their path to wellness, and this begins with access to health care. With access to care comes the ability to maintain housing, and many of these patients are able to get back on their feet–conquering addiction, PTSD, and other chronic mental illnesses.
I am counting on you to make sure no harm is done as we change the health care system. Don’t repeal the ACA until we have a plan in place.
