I was born and raised in Knoxville, TN with five siblings. Five of the six of us have diabetes. In addition to type-1 diabetes, I have a number of other health conditions, such as high cholesterol. Luckily, they can be managed with the right medications, and I am able to remain employed.
Before Obamacare was passed, I had a hard time getting healthcare. Insurance companies would not cover someone like me with pre-existing conditions. This was a huge problem. My medications are necessary for me to live, and paying out-of-pocket for insulin alone ate up more than half of my income.
The Affordable Care Act made it possible for me to get affordable health insurance, which has brought me great relief. However, I am very concerned about repeal. For someone whose life depends on access to certain medications, the ACA is not just a political issue; it is a personal one.
It’s pretty clear that if they tear apart the ACA, many people will find themselves in trouble. People are aware of this. Everyone has a family member or friend who has some kind of injury or illness. Everyone understands the importance of health insurance. Hopefully our politicians do too.
