A VOTE ON MOTION TO PROCEED IS A VOTE FOR REPEAL

Protect Our Care Campaign Director Leslie Dach called on Republican Senators to keep their promise to their constituents and vote no on the motion to proceed on health care repeal today.

“Make no mistake, a vote on the motion to proceed is a vote for health care repeal. It’s a vote to destroy health care in America, increase people’s costs, kick people off their insurance and gut pre-existing condition protections. It’s a vote to take away health care from tens of millions and give a tax break to the wealthy and big corporations. And, it’s a vote that will break the promises many Senators have made to cover everyone, lower costs and to not cut Medicaid.

“Any Senator who votes yes on the motion to proceed has broken their promises to their constituents and should be held accountable for the damage their vote will cause.”

Here’s a snapshot of the promises Republican Senators have made to their constituents – no matter which version of repeal they might vote on, they will be breaking their promises:

  • Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK): “We must continue to prohibit insurers from discriminating against pre-existing of millions of Americans.”

  • Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ): “The legislation needs to ensure that those who currently have coverage do not have the rug pulled out from under them.”

  • Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA): “I will judge the final product as to how well it addresses the issue of pre-existing conditions.”

  • Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME): The bill “needs a major overhaul so that we no longer have 22 million people losing their insurance, sweeping cuts in the medicaid program.”

  • Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME): “My goal is to expand access to health care and have more individuals covered than in the ACA.”

  • Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV): “I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes insurance from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans.”

  • Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV): “At the end of the day, it’s all about the Medicaid expansion, and making sure that these individuals who have health insurance continue to have health insurance.”

  • Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH): “I continue to have real concerns about the Medicaid policies in this bill.”

  • Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV): “You won’t access the [substance abuse] treatment without the [health insurance] coverage, whether from the Exchanges or Medicaid.”
